Politician, Reshma Patel became a different kind of doctor, one who manages fiscal health for cities

After a two decade long public finance career, which included the role of financial advisor to New York City and other city government, Reshma Patel, set her sights on shattering the glass ceiling of politics and ran for office of comptroller of New York City. She stood fifth in a crowded field of thirteen, but now mentors South Asians and other immigrants keen on a political career.

Reshma wept the entire flight when she left India for the US and is still very attached to her birth country, making frequent visits. The early years in America were a struggle but slowly the family rose from poverty and began doing well. There was always a focus on academics and excelling. Reshma graduated from MIT and her sister is a doctor from Harvard. In fact as a young girl, Reshma had even declared she’d run for President.

Reshma muses on how different it is for immigrants today unlike the days she was growing up, when even getting Indian groceries was an experience. Other than her finance wizardry, Reshma also has a light-hearted side. She loves all types of dance and is on the board of Dance America.

In the podcast, Reshma shares stories of her travels in India and remember to listen until the end to learn about her likes and dislikes in the Rapidfire round.
